FULLBORE

Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association

GENERAL Range Rules

These rules apply to everyone using entering the APRA property whether you are a member, a visitor attending a match, or a guest of a member:

  • All people on the APRA property must treat each other with respect;
  • All Single and Associate members must have either a PAL or RPAL, as well as a valid member ID registered in their name, and carry both of these while on the APRA property
  • For Family memberships, the primary member must have either a PAL or RPAL. Family members that do not have a PAL or RPAL must be accompanied by the primary member. Family members that are at least 18 years old and have a PAL or RPAL, may go to the range without the primary member and may bring guests;
  • If there are more than 2 people using the range at once, you must have one person acting as a Range Safety Officer or RSO. This is a Federal law that applies to all shooting ranges. There is no requirement to have taken a formal course, you are only acting as an RSO. The first person at the range will automatically be the acting RSO. If you feel uncomfortable being the RSO, then ask someone else if they would mind doing it. YOU are in charge of ensuring that everyone is following safe procedures and calling the range live or hot. If you are not the RSO, you must follow the instructions of the person who is.
  • Anyone can call a ceasefire if they feel there is an unsafe condition
  • Members and guests must follow the rules regarding guests on this website;
  • All people on the range must follow all Provincial and Federal rules regarding the use of firearms and shooting ranges;
  • All those who are not members and are attending a match must adhere to the match information for visiting shooters on this website;
  • No reactionary or exploding targets (Tannerite etc);
  • No banned or prohibited firearms allowed on the range;
  • Camping is permitted under special circumstances. Read the section under Visitors.
  • The main gate on Homestead Rd must be locked at all times. If the gate is locked when you get there, unlock it, drive through and lock it behind you. If it is locked in the "open" position, simply drive though. This means there is an event at one of the ranges and they will lock it when they are done. If it unsecured when you get there, lock it shut after you drive through.
  • The Fullbore/Swiss gate is used by two clubs and follow the same protocol. If it is locked when you get there, open it, drive through and lock it behind you. If the gate is open, it probably means there is an event at one of the clubs. In that case drive through and leave it open. When you leave, if it appears that there is nobody at either range, please lock it closed.

RANGE SPECIFIC RULES

50m Range

The 50m range has some rules specific to that range:

Sign in

  • Log book located on north side of garage. Use your AFRA number NOT your name
  • Must sign in for insurance purposes. Users are not currently signing in.  Failure to do so can result in suspension or termination of membership.
  • Location of range: locked gate south across parking lot.
  • Parking. Do not park outside of gate blocking Swiss facilities. Park inside range gate or drop off gear then park in AFRA 800m lot and walk

Range operation

  • Raise red flag beside entrance gate when entering.  Leave flag up until last person is off the range.  Last person to lower.
  • Leave gate open when using range. Close the lock upon departure.
  • If someone else remains ensure they have an electronic key. If not, they need to get their gear out of the range before you lock it shut.
  • Do not drive forward of the signs.
  • Target frames, steel duelling trees and replacement target backers are stored inside the sea can on the range. Your electronic key will open the sea can lock. If you take anything out you must put it back before you leave.

Range Rules

  • The 50m range is limited to:
    • Handgun cartridges including .22 cal rimfire. No normal centre fire rifle cartridges allowed even if shot from a pistol (ie: Thompson Contender, Remington XP100, etc);
    • Pistol calibre carbines and lever guns (9mm para, 38/.357, .44 etc);
    • Rimfire rifles; and
    • Shotguns with shot or slug may be used but only when fired horizontally towards the backstop.
  • No projectiles can leave the range.
  • Members may use their own gongs on the range;
  • Anyone observed using an unapproved centre fire rifle will have their membership revoked.
  • Targets may not be placed on the range floor and shooters must not shoot in such a way that rounds will skip off the range floor and leave the bermed area.
  • Club provided gongs can be used with handguns, rimfire rifles and carbines.
  • All targets must be placed within 3 feet of the back berm
  • Anyone observed leaving shotgun hulls on the range floor will have their membership revoked.
  • Clean up your brass, targets and garbage.

900 RANGE

The 900m range has specific rules as well:

  • Sign into the register attached to the maintenance shed;
  • The road leading down to the target area is secured with a locked gate at 800m. Only members that are authorized to open that gate and who have a key, are allowed to open it;
  • If you have been given access to this gate, open the gate and secure it in the open position using the posts on either side of the road;
  • Raise the red flag located beside the gate. This only indicates that the range is in use, not that it is live or hot. When the gate is locked closed and the red flag is lowered, the range is safe;
  • Call a ceasefire and drive down to the far end of the range where the targets are located; the 'butts';
  • Raise the flag located at the butts to green. This indicates the range is safe;
  • No gongs are permitted;
  • Only paper targets are permitted. Staple your target to a target backboard and raise it. If you are using a ShotMarker, follow the 'information' instructions under the 'resources' tab;
  • Raise the flag at the butts to red. This indicates the range is going live;
  • Drive to your desired shooting position, setup, make sure nobody is downrange, declare the range live, and start shooting;
  • When you are finished, make sure the range is safe, call a ceasefire and drive down to the butts;
  • Raise the flag to green;
  • Lower your target frame and remove your paper target. Once you are done you can lower the flag into the plastic pipe;
  • Drive back to the 800m gate and lock it, then lower the red flag. The range is now safe.

Special Considerations When Shooting at 900m

When shooting off the 900m berm, there is a special safety consideration. If the 800m gate is left open there is a possibility that people may drive down the road during live fire. To ensure this does not happen, lock that gate closed, with the red flag up.
